Coconut oil (Cocois oleum)

Coconut oil  (Cocois oleum)

Origin: Asia

This oil is extracted from coconuts of palm trees (Cocos nucifera, Palmae). The palm tree grows up to 30 meters high and can reach an age of over 100 years. Only later, from the age of about 25 years, does the plant bear up to 300 coconuts annually. The coconuts are extracted from the fibrous layer, the flesh boiled in water and freed from the shell. After the pulp has been dried, it is referred to as copra and contains about 60 % fat. The fat is extracted and processed further by boiling or pressing.

Coconut oil is white to pale yellow, and usually of lard-like texture. However, the pleasant characteristic scent transforms itself over time to a grim, unsavory smell. The fat is used mainly for the production of soaps, because it is very easy to emulsify. Then the coconut oil - or rather the hardened fat - is used in the food or cosmetics industry.

The berries are up to 6.5cm long, and can have a diameter of up to 5cm. The approximately 5cm long seeds contain up to 50% fat. In order to extract the fat, the pulp is removed, the seeds dried, crushed, heated and grated. Water is added to this mass and then laboriously cleaned. Shea butter melts between 35 to 42 degrees Celsius, and is surprisingly stable. Even at tropical temperatures it has a shelf life of up to 4 years. One reason for this the naturally occurring vitamin E.
Shea Butter, which is typically marketed in a refined state, is white to pale yellow and almost odorless. It is found in foods such as chocolate or vegetarian cubes. However, the outstanding, skin-nourishing properties also make Shea Butter a valuable raw material in the manufacture of cosmetics.
